A close international collaboration

Our project is the outcome of a close collaboration initiated in 2013 between 3 partners: Ana Sobota from the EPG group at the Technological University of Eindhoven, Enric Garcia Caurel from the Interface and Thin Layer Physics Laboratory, and Olivier Guaitella from the Plasma Physics Laboratory at the Ecole Polytechnique close to Paris. The combination of our expertise has allowed a rapid development of many complementary experimental techniques necessary for a global understanding of filamentary plasma/surface interaction. International joint doctoral students (Elmar Slikboer, Marlous Hofmans) between TU/e and the Ecole Polytechnique illustrate the vivacity of this collaboration.

Ana Sobota is an assistant professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the group Elementary Processes in Gas discharges. She received her PhD in 2011 at TU/e on the studies of high frequency breakdown in noble gasses. She spent a year at Ecole Polytechnique in 2013 setting up electric field measurements in non-thermal plasma jets, which is the main topic of her interest to this day. Ana focuses on atmospheric pressure discharges for applications in medicine and for that reason works with a wide variety of people from other research domains, such as biology and medicine.

Enric Garcia-Caurel is a Research Associate at Ecole Polytechnique since 2003. He is developing projects involving Optical Instrumentation, Light Polarization Management, in the areas of Biomedical Imaging, Optical Diagnosis, Nanotechnology, Nanomaterials, Energy Generation/Harvesting, and Electronics. His main field of research is focusing on Ellipsometry and Polarimetry for Materials Characterization, development of new optical instruments in collaboration with the industry, exploration of new applications of polarized light. His expertise includes the development of scientific instruments for optics and material science.

Olivier Guaitella is a researcher of the Non Thermal Plasma group from Laboratory of Plasma Physics in Ecole Polytechnique near Paris. He has received is PhD degree in Physics in 2006 at Ecole Polytechnique, member of Paris Saclay University. His main research interests are focus on plasma surface interactions and their influence on non-equilibrium plasma kinetics at elevated pressure. This work finds applications for indoor air treatment, Plasma/catalyst coupling, plasma in liquids, plasma jets and more recently CO2 recycling after spending a one year secondment in the group of Richard Engeln at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2014. He has also a strong interest in the development of new diagnostics techniques and has especially an expertise in infrared absorption techniques. He is member of the steering committee of the french non thermal plasma network since 2013.
